I hate the fact that I'm writing this. I really do. But Brett Favre's carefully-worded statement about his "retirement" just leaves the question out there. Is Favre in the Vikings' future? And do you want him to be.
Coming off of a terrific 2007 season, Favre very much looked like a good fit for the Vikings when he started making noise about coming out of retirement last summer. But the 2008, New York Jet version of Brett Favre did not look like the same player, and he really started to show his age down the stretch, especially when the weather got cold. Based on last year's performance, and a shoulder injury that still needs to be corrected, I'd say Favre should stay on his tractor.
But then you look at the Vikings 2009 schedule and you see that they'll be playing 11 games in a climate-controlled environment. And the fact that, with Adrian Peterson, Favre wouldn't be expected to be the hero. Finally, a decrepit Brett Favre is arguably still better than the Vikings current options at quarterback.
I personally think Favre is done, and should stay retired. But I'm more interested in how Vikings fans would react to the thought of him in a Viking uniform. My brother-in-law, a lifeling Viking fan and season ticket-holder, said to me last season that if given the choice between winning the Super Bowl with Favre or not making the playoffs without him, he'd choose the latter. I think there are many Vikings fans who share that sentiment.
Whatever happens, you can be sure that Favre will milk this for all it's worth.
Of Course Favre Will Wear Purple in 2009.
Anyone who really believes that Favre will spend the 09 football season in Kiln, playing high school pickup and chasing alligators through the bayou has been putting too much picante on his lefse.
Favre is a dyed-in-the-wool scandahovian who would like nothing better than to slip into a Viking helmet and throw a slew of interceptions for us this year.
There's only one outstanding question.
Are We Really That Hard Up?
Your brother-in-law is no Viking fan.
If the Vikes were to win the Super Bowl with Favre, they would win without him :)
The only place Farve belongs for a true Vikings' fan is on the turf, hopefully face down. The Vikings did a similar mistake once before when they signed that QB guy from Chicago. That was bad enough...
I agree Mike! Any Viking fan would choose winning a Super Bowl(FINALLY!) no matter what the circumstances Vs. not winning.
Well I'm a Packer fan, and I felt the same way about Moss. I don't care how good anyone THINKS he is, I would not want him as a Packer, no matter what.
Favre has only done this because of "revenge". Thats what he thinks anyway, despite the fact that he brought it all upon himself and has no one to blame but himself. He also using his fake injury excuse for throwing the interceptions (apparently his arm needs an operation).
Funny how the Jets can just release him and get no flack over it. Yet he retires with the Packers, and the Packers get made out to be the bad guy because they moved on.
The Jets only released him because they didn't want him coming back to the Jets at the last minute and going through the same crap the Packers had to go through, with their new quarterback.
Favre also has a long history of throwing league leading interceptions. He isn't the great quarterback he gets made out to be. I lost count of how many season ending playoff game interceptions he has thrown. In my opinion Montana was the best, and I was never a 49er fan.
I'll also take a Super Bowl anyway I can get it.
If Favre could still play, I'd be all for it. But, he can't.
How about Mike Holgrem instead?
I'll take Favre over Tarvaris Jackson any day!
This Packer fan would convert for one year, hate the management in Green Bay.
You guys don't understand what sports is all about. I hated Favre his entire tenure with the Packers. He was the face, the heart and soul, of our most intense rival. You're telling me you'd now welcome number 4 with open arms? I know we are in the era of free agency, but some things just shouldn't be. After waiting all this time for a Super Bowl title, you're telling me it wouldn't be diminished greatly if the former star of our avowed NFC North enemy was finally the one who was able to make it happen? I say anybody who WANTS Favre is not a true fan. I suspect I was living and dying with Joe Kapp, Gary Cuozzo, Bill Brown, Dave Osborne and Page and Marshall before any of you were even born. Don't call me a non-fan.
