Stadium status quo

Posted at 10:09 AM on February 12, 2009 by Chris Dall

Looks like the Vikings are taking the gloves off in their effort to get state money for a new stadium. Team VP Lester Bagley is now blasting Governor Pawlenty for his failure to support Vikings ownership in its efforts to build a new home, saying that the governor hasn't "lifted a finger" to solve the problem. Vikings ownership is expected to ask the state for $700 million to help build the stadium, which would be on the current site of the Metrodome.

The Vikings are facing a daunting challenge here. With the state facing a $5 billion plus deficit, the governor and the legislature are in no mood to cough up public money for a stadium. The Vikings latest approach in pitching the stadium has been that it will provide economic stimulus for the state and put people to work, but so far, that argument seems to have gained little traction.

Meanwhile, another real estate billionaire, Ed Roski Jr., is working on plans to build a new stadium in Los Angeles, a market that the NFL has wanted to get back into for years. Zygi Wilf has said several times that he has no plans to move the team out of Minnesota, but one has to wonder how long he'll hold out if he can't get a new stadium.
