To boo or not to boo

Do you boo at sporting events? Do you loudly express your disdain for a team when they'e not performing up to expectations? Do you call out individual players for their performance? Or do you think fans of a team should be unwavering in their public support?

I don't think I've ever booed a team I was supporting on any occasion. It annoys me when a team is playing beneath their capability, and I might curse them from the confines of my basement. But, personally, I'm just not a booer. Not that I don't believe in it, or think it's unfair, but I'm just not big on public displays of disaffection. I also think it's kind of silly. I do, however, think it's entirely warranted for fans to vent when players clearly don't care (I'm talking to you, Randy Moss).

But ever since last sunday's Vikings "victory" over the Detroit Lions, a game that might come to define the Childress era in Minnesota, I've been rethinking my stance. There was a fair amount of booing at that game, along with chants of "Fire Childress!" (though I don't think anyone went so far as to say "off with his head!"). I was surprised to hear this coming from a Minnesota crowd, but it's hard to argue that it wasn't deserved. That was one of the more pathetic performances in recent memory. It made the Tice years look like a golden era.

After the game, some Vikings players suggested the booing was uncalled for, and that the team needs their full support. Here's an idea: try playing better. I may not personally like to boo, but when you can barely beat a winless team that's already given up on their season, on your home field, you're asking to be booed. And if the Vikings next game at the Dome isn't any better, the players might want to bring some earplugs. They might even hear me booing from my basement.

a paying fan has every right to boo and say anything that isn't profane......if the coaches and players can't handle it, they should fine another line of work....and you can bet it would pay a lot less....

I personally don't boo players, though I have no problem booing officials after they blow a call. I've actually given players from other teams a hand if they make a spectacular play on defense (baseball).
