September Call Ups Loom

Here's a quick look at some of the players the Twins may call up when the rosters are expanded on September 1.

Howie Clark (34), IF: .283/.332/.422
Journeyman has played in 134 big league games in 6 seasons including 4 this year with the Twins.

Garrett Jones (27), 1B-OF: .273/.331/.472, 21 HR & 84 RBI
Played in 31 games with the Twins in 2007.

Bobby Kielty (32), OF: .225/.354/.388
Began the season in Pawtucket, signed with Rochester on August 11, played with the Twins from 2001-03.

Alejandro Machado (26), IF: .353/.385/.482 in 48 games
Rule V pick in 2007, played 10 games with the Red Sox in 2005.

Matt Macri (26), IF: .255/.319/.456
Played in 14 games with the Twins earlier this season and hit .367/.406/.500.


Brian Bass (26): 3-4, 4.87 ERA in 44 games with Twins
His quick acceptance of demotion last week points to his return on Monday.

Mariano Gomez (25): 5-2, 2.90 ERA in 51 games
6-6 lefty may intrigue Twins.

Phillip Humber (25): 9-8, 4.66 ERA, 102 K, 49 BB
Part of Johan Santana trade.

Bobby Korecky (28): 6-4, 2.90 ERA, 25 Saves
Appeared in 9 games this season with the Twins.

Kevin Mulvey (23): 7-9, 3.73 ERA, 116 K, 46 BB
Also part of the Johan Santana deal.

Wow. That Kielty is one ugly mother. I remember being hesitant when the Twins traded him for Stewart, but was very happy with the front office on that one. That one rates second to the AJ trade in recent history.

I think a big key for the rest of the year is how much these pitchers can contribute. It will be good to have Korecky in the bullpen, I know that. But, if the rest of these guys can hold their own, and give the other guys a rest, that should hopefully put us in a good position for October (if we can get there, that is).

You're missing one thing on the list. A third catcher. Having a third catcher will allow Gardy to use Redmond in pinch hitting situations that he matches up well. It will also allow him to give Joe a rest for part of a game during the stretch run.

you're right...jose morales is an option, but he is on the DL right now, so I didn't include him....
