Lynx Rookie Candice Wiggins Soaks in Every Second

Note: We've been contemplating making "Bleacher Bums" an all-sports blog; just to test the waters I've decided to place an occasional random non-baseball related entry. Any feedback you have on this idea would be greatly appreciated.

If 2008 were to end today, it would already be an amazing year for Candice Wiggins. So far, the 21-year-old daughter of former Padre Alan Wiggins has led Stanford to the NCAA title game, won the Wade Trophy as Player of the Year, been selected 3rd overall in the WNBA Draft and helped the turn the Lynx into a winning team.

With all of that under her belt, Wiggins still has an Olympic appearance, the WNBA playoffs and Rookie of the Year all within her reach. I caught up with the impressive rookie after today's practice.

DZ: The season is still pretty new, but you guys have been a streaky team with a 5 game winning streak and a 5 losing streak, how much does the youth of the team have to do with that?

WIGGINS: I don't know how much it has to do with that. The games we lost that were one-point games were games we should have won - overtime games. It just comes down to one play.

DZ: How about you personally, coming off the college season (and playing) all of the extra games. Is that something your body is getting adjusted to?

WIGGINS: I am making sure I take care of my body. I am making sure I get rest and stuff like that...I am just going off of adrenaline.

DZ: You are coming off of the bench right now and playing really well, is getting into the starting line-up something you are thinking about?

WIGGINS: Not really. For me it's just about making myself better and helping the team out. I think I am in a situation where I am coming off the bench and giving us a lot of energy. I can't complain; I am just happy to be able to contribute.

DZ: Coming out of the draft, a lot of people are looking at you and the other Candace - Candace Parker - do you check up on her stats at all and think about Rookie of the Year?

WIGGINS: I don't. I know she is doing amazing and all that, but that's not what I am thinking about right now, I am just thinking about Sacramento (tomorrow night).

DZ: Have you had a chance to check out the city at all?

WIGGINS: I'd love to go to museums or restaurants, but I haven't been able to do stuff like that.

DZ: What are your interests outside of basketball?

WIGGINS:
I have been to Mall of America about 15 times. I love shopping a lot. I love to look at art...I love the city lifestyle.

DZ: You are coming off such a great college season; winning the Wade Trophy, making the Final 4, the Championship Game. Have you had a chance to reflect on that or have you just been too busy?

WIGGINS:
I think the best thing I did was just live the moment. At the Final 4 in Tampa, I soaked in every second of it. Winning the Wade Trophy...I just soaked it all in. I think that my experience, the journey it took to get there were more than enough for me...I don't need to reflect on it.

DZ: You and (teammate) Charde Houston grew up together in the San Diego area; do have any funny stories you could share about her?

WIGGINS: Yeah, there's about a thousand...One time when we were in high school - we were at San Diego High School - we were about to leave there and were waiting in the weight room. There was a tread mill in there and Charde starts turning up the tread mill to higher and higher speeds until it starts going really fast and then she does something where she tries to jump on top of it and start to run and ends up falling and hitting herself in the head and then is sprawled out on the floor, we thought she was dead.

Great interview. I became a huge Candice Wiggins fan ever since she came to Tampa in the Final Four. She and Candace put on one of the best Final Fours in history in my home town. And now she's battling Candace for "Rookie of the year," honors. That's great for both of them. I hope they continue to excel in the WNBA.
I do want Candice to start though, even though it doesn't really matter that much. She's still the second highest scorer and she's coming off the bench. That's just amazing.
