Delmon Young's disappointing season took a turn for the worse last night when he badly misplayed a fly ball which turned into a 3-run, inside-the-park homerun and sent the game into extra innings. To top it off, Young went 0 for 6 in the game and is now hitting .262/.318/.333 with 0 homers. Yikes! It kind of makes you pine for Jason Tyner.
Convential wisdom says that Young is too young and too talented to write off. He was the centerpiece of the Twins off-season acquistions and like Carlos Gomez, politics will play a role in keeping him in the line-up (if they haven't already). At the same time, Jason Kubel and Craig Monroe have proven to be more productive this year. It's a shame that Kubel, who is second on the team in homeruns and RBI is not in the line-up everyday for a team that sorely needs more offense.
If my calculations are correct, Young is not out of options, so why not send him to Rochester for a few weeks where he'll hopefully pound International League pitching and get his confidence back?
