Torii's talking points

Posted at 10:21 AM on September 26, 2007 by Chris Dall (1 Comments)

Soon-to-be-former Twins centerfielder Torii Hunter was interviewed by Dan Bareirro on KFAN yesterday, and as usual had some interesting things to say. Among the most notable comments he made was that some people on the team need to be "slapped around" and learn how to play hurt. He went on to say that he wasn't singling out Joe Mauer, but I think it's clear that's probably who he meant. He also said the Twins need more "athletes" (really?) and that he doesn't see the Twins offering him a 5-year deal. You can listen to that interview here.

If he is gone, and I think most people think that's a fait accompli, this team is sorely going to miss Hunter in more ways than just on the field. We've all heard about him being the heart and soul of the team, but he's also one of the few with real charisma. Without him, the Twins become a team without any personality or flair. Mauer and Morneau are clearly the faces of the team, but as Morneau said to David Zingler, neither of them are guys who say a lot. So if Torii leaves, who becomes the voice of the team?

Santana for a Song??

Former "Bleacher Bum" and longtime Indians fan Bob Collins pointed out the following Johan Santana "rumor" to me ealier today.

According to the post on Yahoo, the Twins may send Santana to the Dodgers for 23-year-old OF Matt Kemp (who would replace Hunter in CF) and LH pitching prospect Clayton Kershaw.

Surely, the Twins could do better -- I need a KG/Frank Viola-style 5 for 1, including at least one established major league star to even consider dealing the two-time Cy Young winner.

Otherwise, they might as well hang onto him and take the 1st round pick as compensation when he bolts via free agency.
