Although I’ve slipped up here and there, I always try to avoid kicking people when they are down. That’s why I think it’s only fair that someone other than Sid Hartman should stick up for Terry Ryan right now.
It’s true, the trading deadline came and went and the Twins are worse off for it. Let’s face it though; there was only one difference-making bat dealt this week – Mark Teixiera – and he plays first base. Last time I checked, the Twins had a decent first baseman.
Ty Wigginton would have been an upgrade at third, but with a career .326 OBP, he’s more of a stop-gap than a stalwart. It would make no sense to deal a potential top-of-the-rotation starter like Kevin Slowey or Matt Garza for him.
Sure, Ryan could have done more in the off-season to bolster the offense than re-sign Rondell White and pray that Jason Kubel would pan out, but he’s also limited by a shoe-string payroll. Which brings me to the real culprit: Carl Pohlad. The Nonagenarian miser got the taxpayers to pay for the majority of the team’s new stadium and still won’t creak open his wallet.
Maybe instead of directing their venom at the General Manager, the Twins players and fans should follow the money trail right to the owner’s door. He’s a billionaire and they’re always eligible for a kick or two.
