Yesterday was one of the most eventful sports days we’ve had in awhile: Kevin Garnett is, for all intents and purposes, sent to Boston, Luis Castillo gets dealt to the Mets, Kyle Lohse is unloaded on the Phillies and Mark Teixiera goes to Atlanta in a semi-block buster. Oh yeah, and the Twins won too.
The Garnett trade took so much of the media’s attention (and deservedly so), that the Luis Castillo fire sale was relegated to a spot way below the fold on the front page of today’s Strib. Terry Ryan insists this isn’t signaling surrender for the team, but after listening to his comments, Ron Gardenhire doesn’t sound so sure. Welcome to the Alexi Casilla era, let’s hope it doesn’t end like the Luis Rivas one did.
You can officially add “journeyman” as a pre-fix to Kyle Lohse’s name and “well-traveled” is right around the corner. The Braves meanwhile, add one of the game’s top young hitters in Teixiera, who could be the heir-apparent to Chipper Jones as “Mr. Brave”.
In case you missed it, the Twins also played a game last night. Scott Baker was brilliant, giving up just 2 hits in 8 innings, while Joe Mauer drove in all of the Twins runs in the 3-1 victory. That’s three in a row, are the Twins getting hot – for real – this time??
