While it's certainly fun to talk about possible trades the Twins might make to improve their chances this year, I think many of us who follow the team are inclined to believe no immediate help is on the way. The last big midseason deal Terry Ryan made was Bobby Kielty-for-Shannon Stewart in 2003, which turned out to be a fantastic trade for the Twins (although Seth Speaks didn't like the trade at all at the time). But I'm not sure a similar move is on the way this season. Would Ty Wiggington help? Certainly, but I just have a hard time believing Ryan will let go of the pitching prospects that Tampa will most likely want in return.
As we all know, Ryan has a penchant for throwing stuff up against the wall and seeing what sticks (see Batista, Tony; Ortiz, Ramon; Ponson, Sidney; Cirillo, Jeff). With that in mind, I noticed this morning that the Angels just released 1B/3B/DH Shea Hillenbrand, who seems to fit the profile of the type of player Ryan likes to take a flyer on--i.e., past his prime and cheap. I wouldn't say I'm advocating the move, but I can certainly see it happening. And he couldn't be much worse than Brett Boone.
In the meantime, I hope you're all getting pumped up for the return of Rondell White. I know I am.
