In a move that should be cause for celebration in some parts of the state, La Velle E. Neal of the Star Tribune is reporting that the Twin have designated Sidney Ponson for assignment. First Baseman/DH Garrett Jones has been called up to take his spot on the roster, with no word yet on who will take Ponson's place in the rotation.
Think the Twins made a mistake by signing Ponson? Well, it could have been worse. We could have signed Jeff Weaver. Weaver is currently 0-6 with a 14.32 era. Oh, and he’s making $8 million this year. This is the same Jeff Weaver who was seen going 3-2 with a 2.43 era in the playoffs last year. One wonders why Weaver decided to come back to the American League, where he generally gets hammered, after having a fair amount of success in the National League (he went 27-24 with the LA Dodgers in the 2004 and 2005 seasons). Ponson looks like a bargain by comparison.
