Good News, Bad News for Gophers

They didn’t play one of their best games, but the University of Minnesota played well enough to defeat Illinois 10-3 in its first game at the 2007 Big Ten Baseball Championship. It was the kind of start the second-seed Gophers needed. However, an upset in other action might be cause for concern.

Perennial power house Ohio State upended Michigan last night, putting the top-seeded and host Wolverines a loss away from elimination. Minnesota was hoping that if it didn’t win the tournament, Michigan would. The reason? If the conference’s automatic bid is captured by one of the teams without the credentials to earn an at-large bid, Minnesota is likely the Northern team once again left out in the cold.

In other college baseball news,'s National Baseball Columnist Eric Sorenson spent the Gophers’ final weekend at home at Siebert Field and sat down with Minnesota coach John Anderson. Their conversation is a must-read for any fan of the Gophers and college baseball. Anderson’s take on how the new uniform start date will force the Southern teams to play more midweek games and affect their pitching rotations was extremely eye-opening. College baseball should be a national, and not just a regional sport. But will this be enough to make that happen?
