A beautiful thing....

Posted at 10:29 AM on May 23, 2007 by David Zingler

Last night’s 7-1 win in Texas was a beautiful thing. Our Cy Young winner was dominant, our MVP carried the offense and two-thirds of the Rangers were retired via strike out. Despite Sunday’s missed opportunity and Monday’s drubbing, I think the Twins are close to getting back on track. Of course, with all of the injuries in the bullpen, I could be eating those words very soon. Time will tell and today’s game is a big one.....Booooof.....

Santana Proves Speed Kills

Posted at 11:37 AM on May 23, 2007 by Steve Rudolph

A good friend of mine who has worked in baseball for years made an interesting observation after Johan Santana last start in Cleveland. He noted that Santana was barely topping 90 mph with his fastball and had done the same in his previous start at the Dome against the Tigers.

Santana still pitched well enough to win both of those games…at least it would have been enough for a win if he played for a team that fielded a major league lineup everyday and could hit left-handed pitching. That said, Santana didn’t look like the pitcher that won the Cy Young award in two of the past three seasons.

He did against the Rangers. Santana’s fastball consistently hit 95 mph, which made the game's best changeup even more devastating. Santana struck out a season-high 13 batters in just seven innings and now leads the majors in that category with 80.

Another Twins pitcher among the league leaders in strikeouts, Boof Bonser, takes the mound next and with a chance to lead the Twins to something they haven’t done in a while – win consecutive series.
