Mauer's leg injured, Morneau contract talks end

Posted at 12:13 PM on March 22, 2007 by David Zingler

Not a good news day in Twins Territory.....according the Star Tribune, Joe Mauer has a "stress reaction in his left fibula," which will be reevaluated on Sunday.

Keep that in mind when reading the below:

Twins will go as Morneau goes in ‘07

The Twins and Justin Morneau ended their negotiations for a contract extension yesterday. According to the Strib, the team was offering something comparable to the 4-year, $33 million deal Joe Mauer agreed to in February, but Morneau wanted more.

Does Morneau deserve more than Mauer? Probably not, but who knows what his agent is telling him. Last year the M&M Boys were a novelty, two young guys living in a large townhouse littered with bobbleheads, hockey sticks and DVDs. You couldn’t not like them.

This year they are the reigning AL batting champion and MVP. Both will have targets on their backs and opponents, fans and the media will be taking aim.

From everything we’ve seen so far, Mauer is more of a sure bet to handle the added pressure gracefully (if he is healthy), which means the Twins season, offensively at least, hinges on whether Morneau will resemble the 2006 MVP version or the 2005 model that drew David McCarty comparisons.

I happen to think that, while the Canadian will not likely win a second straight MVP, he will post similar numbers. And if you’re a Twins fan, you better hope I’m right.
