According to MLB.com, the Twins rotation is now basically set and will look like this: Johan Santana, Carlos Silva, Ramon Ortiz, Sidney Ponson and Boof Bonser. As the Strib notes today, Silva has been horrible this spring, while Ponson hasn’t been effective since 2003. So why stick with either of them?
The answer is simple on Silva, he’s been solid two out of three seasons with the Twins and is guaranteed over $4 million this year. He will get every opportunity (and then some) to stick…but as the No. 2 starter? Bonser finished last season near the top of the rotation and I see no reason not to keep him there.
Ponson meanwhile, looks to have few redeeming qualities and is signed to a non-guaranteed, minor league contract. I see no reason to bring him north.
If I were manger, my rotation would look like this: Santana, Bonser, Ortiz, Silva, and Matt Garza, with Kevin Slowey and Glen Perkins waiting in the wings. Oh yeah, and Silva would be on a very short leash.
