In honor of pitchers and catchers reporting, I decided to take a look at some of the non-roster invitees who will have to beat the odds to earn a big league paycheck…
Sandy Alomar Jr., 40, Mets, C: Alomar is a survivor and my guess is he’ll find a way to make the team.
Rick Ankiel, 27, Cardinals, OF: The former hurler who lost and never found the strike zone is hoping to be reincarnated as an OF.
Dewon Brazelton, 26, Royals, P: The 3rd pick in the 2001 Draft is one of many failed Tampa prospects.
Jim Brower, 34, Pirates, P: The former Gopher and Minnesota native hopes to land a spot in the Pirates ‘pen.
Jerry Hairston, 30, Rangers, IF: Hairston joins Sammy Sosa (38), the man he was traded for two years ago, as non-roster players in Rangers camp.
Curtis Pride, 38, Angels, OF: Legally deaf, Pride’s amazing career should not be forgotten.
NRI’s former Twins style…
Tony Batista, 33, Nationals, 3B: Retire already!
Eddie Guardado, 36, Reds, P: No longer a closer, Everyday Eddie hopes to get another season out of his surgically repaired left arm.
Joe Mays, 31, Dodgers, P: Could be the last chance for former All Star.
Corky Miller, 30, Braves, C: Will delight Richmond Braves fans this summer.
Dustan Mohr, 31, Devil Rays, OF: You’ll have to tear the uniform off this guy.
Luis Rivas, 27, Indians, IF: I was trying to forget about him.
Ruben Sierra, 41, Mets, OF: Talk about hanging on, Sierra looked washed up last year.
