The Robot Fielder
From The 6th Annual New York Times Magazine Year in Ideas comes this invention called the Catch-Bot, which mimics how a human catches a fly ball: by moving so that the ball stays aligned within your visual field in a straight line. These ASU people built a robot that moves so that its camera sensor always views the ball in a straight line, allowing it to run down fly balls, and now even field ground balls at a .750 percentage.
There is no word yet on whether the Tigers will use the Catch-Bot to field for its pitchers.
