Twins could use Lee's power
The Twins have long coveted Lee, and now there is talk in baseball circles that the Milwaukee Brewers will move him if they continue losing before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
A left fielder, Lee is a free agent at season's end. He is batting .284 with 27 home runs and 79 RBI.
He would give the Twins a righthanded cleanup presence between Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau, allowing Michael Cuddyer to move into the No. 6 slot.
I've seen a lot of rumor that Soriano could be a Twin as well, although he's making 1.5 million more than lee this year. Pat Burrell (at 1.2 more) and Bobby Abreu (5 more, and a lefty) have also been mentioned as being available for a Lohse-level starter. Or we could go the cheap route, now that Ruben Sierra is gone and Sammy Sosa still wants to play. After all, Sosa's hit 30 homers in a season 11 times since the last time Sierra did. Sounds like he'd take a small contract to get the change to get the 12 homers that would put him over 600.
Honestly, I'd take any of those guys you mentioned... except maybe Sosa, but I'd even think twice about that. If Lohse was involved, I'd pretty much take whatever the offer was: veteran, prospects, new T-shirt gun, bag of peanuts, etc.
Sammy Sosa!? Did you see him last year -- he's a shrunken shell of his former self. It would take him 500 AB to get those 12 HRs. Remember they test for steriods now.........
Nobody's disputing that, but you have to look at the whole picture. What were the Twins expecting out of Ruben Sierra that Sammy Sosa can't match at worst, for the same price? A washed up Sosa's gotta be better than Lew Ford in a career year, anyway.
