AL Player of the Month, June 2006: Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins.
AL Pitcher of the Month, June 2006: Johan Santana, Minnesota Twins.
AL Rookie of the Month, June 2006: Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins.
For the first time ever, one team dominated the three monthly award categories, and the way these guys have been playing, the sweep is no surprise. Two of these players will be going to next week's All-Star game, because not even Ozzie Guillen is insane enough to leave Mauer and Santana off the roster. The other one threw a career-high 12 strikeouts today, but will still have to suffer through the indignity of an Idol-style runoff ballot to find out if he's in.
And I should probably rail at the ignorance of the voting public for choosing Ivan Rodriguez (and Jason Varitek) over Mauer as the AL's starting catcher, but I've never been able to take the All-Star Game seriously enough to get worked up over that sort of thing. Besides, I've always had a little soft spot for ol' Not-So-Much-Pudge, so I don't actually mind seeing him out there. Much.
