This canít be it...
It wasnít long ago, we had visions of Thomas, Nomar and Piazza dancing in our heads. Instead we got Tony Batista and Rondell White. (Word is, negotiations with Butch Huskey and Sean Bergman are on-going.) Last summer, I cut Terry Ryan some slack when he didnít make a trade, thinking the market was bad and he would make up for it during the winter. I really like Luis Castillo, but if we are expecting legit power from anyone on this team, itís still going to have to be Justin Morneau, not Bastista or White, that provides it. That means the off-season has been an exercise in futility for our Little Team that Probably Canít.
More offense?? Thatís on you..
What do Jack Morris, Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor and Terry Steinbach have in common? Thatís easy - they are all from Minnesota and played for the Twins during their distinguished careers. They are also the only high profile free agents the Twins have signed since the first Bush administration.
Letís face it, if Twins ever decide to roll the dice for a big name player, he assuredly will have been born within driving distance of the Metrodome. (Would they even have drafted Joe Mauer over Mark Prior and Mark Texeira if he were from Illinois?) All of this leads me to a single conclusion Ė one that Terry Ryan, Carl Pohlad and the state legislature have no control of Ė Itís up to Minnesota dads to get their youngsters out on the diamond and put a bat in their hands.
Oh yeah, a stop at GNC might not hurt either.
