So Jason Giambi has won the comeback player of the year award. Granted this is now a fan-voted so New York, which pushed 4 million people through the turnstiles, are always going to win. That's fine.
But who nominated him and what was he coming back from? Steroid use? Is that an award now?
The nominees were: Giambi, Roy Halladay, Bob Wickman, Jay Gibbons, Barry Zito and Richie Sexson. No peeking: which one of these folks was the subject of leaked grand jury testimony admitting to the use of illegal drugs?
Maybe it was the comeback from the unbridled ridicule he faced when the Yanks came to the dome in July. During a late at-bat in Sunday's rubber game (that the Twins had pretty well under control thanks to some hundred-thousand dollar errors by Sheffield and A-Rod), fans actually chanted at Giambi - "MVP! MVP!"
So cruel, yet so funny.
I have to agree, Bob. Coming back from a sub-par year that was due, BY ONE'S ONE ADMISSION, to juice withdrawal should not qualify one for a "Comeback" award. Less community service, maybe, but not a comeback award.
