Artistic Statement

Ney Rosauro's Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra is a staple in standard marimba repertoire. It is by far the most played marimba concerto. I chose to play this piece for the technical challenges it offers. It was the first full concerto I learned, and it has been my stepping stone into the advanced, four-mallet marimba repertoire. With multiple versions of this piece, including a wind ensemble and percussion ensemble version, I have played it in a wide variety of settings. The piece is very idiomatic on the keyboard, and with practice, it is accessible to to many marimbists. I have selected this piece to submit because it pairs so well with the sound of the marimba. The Brazilian inspired writing meshes wonderfully with the unique timbre of the marimba. This has made it the most popular marimba concerto in the world.
