When the National Guard's 34th Infantry Division deployed to Iraq in April 2009, military officials noted the scope of the unit's mission.

The Red Bulls were responsible for all coalition military operations in nine Iraqi provinces, covering the southern third of the country.

More than 1,000 soldiers deployed to Iraq with the 34th Infantry Division, most coming from cities and towns across Minnesota.
