The father of a missing University of St. Thomas student asked residents of St. Paul to help find his son.

Freshman Dan Zamlen was last heard from early Sunday morning after leaving a party. The Eveleth native told a friend he was walking near the Mississippi River when his cell phone suddenly cut out.

Dale Zamlen thinks his son, who has Type 1 diabetes and may have been drinking, is struggling to survive. Zamlen wants residents who live in the area where his son disappeared to check their property.

"Check around your yards and homes," Dale Zamlen said. "Because in his condition, he's borderline comatose or maybe in a coma trying to survive. He needs your help if you locate him or find him, it'll be a 911 call. It's an emergency. He needs medical assistance."

St. Paul police and fire officials said they want to search the Mississippi River bank with boats near where they think Zamlen disappeared, but high water on the river is keeping them from doing so.

Today is Dan Zamlen's 19th birthday.
