Governor: Mike Hatch

SNAPSHOT
Mike Hatch announced his intention to seek the DFL nomination for governor on October 24, 2005. He won the party's endorsement at the state convention in Rochester on June 10, 2006. The state's top lawyer has a lengthy career of battling insurance companies and HMOs who have denied coverage to Minnesotans. For his gubernatorial announcement, Mike Hatch was joined by two women who praised him for going to bat for them. Hatch says he would focus on access to health care and quality education -- both K-12 and higher education -- for middle-class Minnesotans. He wouldn't say whether he'd need to raise taxes to fund his priorities. Hatch won the September 2006 primary race with 73 percent of the vote cast; well ahead of fellow DFLer Becky Lourey.

Hatch was elected attorney general in 1998 and re-elected in 2002. He was the only statewide Democrat to win in 2002. Prior to his election he was an attorney in private practice.

He was the state DFL Party chair from 1980-1983 before joining the administration of Gov. Rudy Perpich as commerce commissioner. He ran for governor in 1994, but lost a primary battle with Sen. John Marty.
