SNAPSHOT
Normally, this race gets little attention. Rep. Martin Sabo runs. Rep. Martin Sabo wins easily. But on March 18, 2006, Sabo announced his retirement from Congress; an announcement that took even DFL-insiders by surprise. Minnesota's 5th Congressional District is made up primarily of the city of Minneapolis and a few adjoining suburbs. It includes the affluent neighborhoods around Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet, the University of Minnesota, and the downtown area.
However, a large section of the 5th also includes residents with considerably lower incomes.
There is probably no greater DFL stronghold in all of Minnesota than the 5th. John Kerry and Al Gore carried this district in their presidential quests by an almost 2-to-1 margin.
