I feel that polls are the same as election day's projected winners.
In 1980, Reagan, the projected winner was given before the people in the west had a chance to vote. The results were [citizens] left the line or did not go to vote. The losers are the others running for other offices. If you don't go to vote, others may not win/lose, also referendums may not pass, or will pass. Then we all are the losers.

Voter does own research
I do not rely on opposing candidates to get information about their opponent.
I only assess information and policies that a candidate presents about their individual ideas, thinking and positions. It is really not in any individual candidate's interest to promote the thinking of their opponent in a positive light. I leave it to my own critical thinking to assess the facts and individual candidate's thinking.
If I want to know what Obama thinks about an issue I research for this information. If I want to know what John McCain thinks I research for this information.
