I agree wholeheartedly with the mayor; ridership has gone through the roof and fuel prices typically make up approximately 10% of public transit system costs. [MPR News: Rybak opposes bus fare increase]
Rather than hike fares, Metro Transit should be looking into other options such as more rail which runs on electricity and would not be affected as much by rising diesel costs.
The cost of most products includes energy. For production, transportation, it doesn't matter. Do the math, the same oil is used in plastics, heats homes, and drives cars. People have been idiots, living on credit and wasting energy. We call this a civil society but we turn grain to fuel and people who are poor starve. I feel sorry for the old people trying to make it. If we had a better-educated society then the SUV craze would not have happened. [Now we] reap the results.
