The reason I chose the Glazunov Concerto was because it is a challenging solo for alto saxophone that showcases specific melodic and technical passages that exemplify saxophone performance. I have been working with a remarkable saxophone teacher for private lessons who has encouraged me to develop my interest in playing classical music. This piece was written by Russian Composer Alexander Glazunov and quickly became a classical standard for alto saxophone. The range and difficulty of this piece presented a pleasant challenge for me that inspired me to try to capture all of the subtleties of the work in my performance.
When I first heard the Glazunov Concerto, I was enthralled by the magnificence of the piece. I have enjoyed playing classical compositions by other composers but this work was one of the few in the literature and best known concertos written for the alto saxophone. A concerto is such a wonderful form to play as a solo piece because it provides many entry points with varied tempos and contrasting styles. I was fortunate to find a piece that is romantic and fuses so many styles of playing. This piece accentuates the tonality and beauty of the solo alto saxophone and allows me to demonstrate my articulation ability and skills at performing a masterpiece of music. Preparing and performing this piece has helped me to grow as a musician and provided me with a tremendous composition to develop my performance capabilities.
