Including MPR in Your Will
The charitable bequest is a simple yet effective way of providing for Minnesota Public Radio without giving up the asset until death. When drafting a will, there are various types of bequests for different needs:
- A specific bequest. You can name Minnesota Public Radio the direct beneficiary of a stated amount of money, a particular piece of property, or a stated percentage of your estate.
- A residuary bequest. You can designate Minnesota Public Radio to receive all or a portion of the remainder of your estate once all specific bequests (to family and friends) have been satisfied.
- A contingent bequest. Often, individuals provide that assets should go to family members or friends. However, it is important to provide for a contingent beneficiary to receive assets in case your named individual beneficiaries do not survive you.
Bequests to Minnesota Public Radio are deductible from your gross estate and can therefore offer estate tax savings. There is no limit on the amount you can leave to MPR or to other charitable organizations through your will.
Use of Gifts: You may either restrict your bequest or leave it unrestricted. Unrestricted gifts offer the advantage of permitting MPR to allocate resources in a manner consistent with changing priorities and strategies over time. If you wish to that your bequest be used for a particular program interest, please add the following phrase to the wording recommended above:- To be directed specifically to the Minnesota Public Radio News and Information Endowment Fund.
- To be directed specifically to the Minnesota Public Radio Arts and Performance Endowment Fund.
Thank you for remembering Minnesota Public Radio.
Please note that gifts of this nature should be carefully considered in relation to your comprehensive financial and estate plans. If you have not yet written a will, regardless of your charitable intent, please consider this. We strongly recommend that you consult an attorney in the preparation of your will and to supervise its execution so as to comply with your state requirements.
