The Hopefuls - October 30
The Hopefuls describe their music as "fun music for happy times." The description is accurate, as the Hopefuls kick out rollicking, feel-good rock'n'roll that combines infectious guitar leads, choral backing vocals and some unexpected elements thrown in for good measure. The Hopefuls' Erik Appelwick, Darren Jackson, Heath Henjum, Eric Fawcett and John Hermanson invite Peter Anderson, John Munson, Matt Wilson and Dan Wilson to join them on stage this evening.
The Current host Mary Lucia will welcome the evening.
Previous Guest Session Sundays
Happy Apple - October 2
Named after a Fisher-Price toy from the 1960s, Happy Apple combine the energy, attitude and backbeat of indie rock with the art, accessibility and improvisation of jazz. They've released six albums to date, including 2005's "Peace Between Our Companies," which has garnered rave reviews. Later this month, Happy Apple will be departing on a five-date tour in France; in early 2006, they'll be touring Spain, Italy and Switzerland. Happy Apple's bassist/composer Erik Fratzke, drummer David King and saxophonist Michael Lewis have invited singer/songwriter Wendy Lewis as their special guest. Ms. Lewis has earned six Minnesota Music Awards for her outstanding work.
The Current host Mark Wheat will welcome the evening.
The Honeydogs - October 9
The Honeydogs are considered one of today's best melodic pop bands. The group's clever songwriting has drawn comparisons with everyone from classic ensembles like The Band and the Beach Boys to contemporary artists such as Aimee Mann and the Jayhawks. Composed of Adam Levy (guitar, keyboards, lead vocals), Peter Anderson (drums), Trent Norton (bass, vocals), Brian Halverson (guitar, vocals), Jeff Victor (keyboards, vocals), Peter J. Sands (keyboards), Brian Gallagher (tenor sax), Matt Darling (trombone) and Steven Kung (trumpet), the Honeydogs have invited John Munson, JoAnna James, Dave Pirner, Andra Suchy, Laura Bennett, Joe Savage, Laurie Lindeen and Noah Levy to share the stage with them.
The Current's Chris Roberts will welcome the evening.
Boiled in Lead - October 16
For more than 20 years, Boiled in Lead have been pleasing folkies and rockers alike through their innovative dance tunes that blend various rhythms, melodies and global sounds. Boiled in Lead's Robin "Adnan" Anders (drums), Dean Magraw (guitar), Todd Menton (vocals, guitar, mandolin, bodhrán), Drew Miller (bass) and David Stenshoel (violin) have won a collective 18 Minnesota Music Awards for their work, both individually and as a group. They welcome to the stage Tim Eriksen, Ruth MacKenzie and Gloria "La Niña" Rivera.
The Current host Dale Connelly will welcome the evening.
Polara - October 23
Formed in Minneapolis in 1994, Polara meld the ostensibly disparate sounds of rock and electronica, noise and melody, pop and not-pop. Experimental, soulful songs are the hallmarks of this iconoclastic band. With Ed Ackerson on guitar and vocals, Jennifer Jurgens on keyboards, guitar and vocals, Peter Anderson on drums and ex-Jayhawks' Mark Perlman on bass, Polara combine the abstract, the personal and the traditional with the highly innovative. Polara's special guests are Astronaut Wife, Kraig Jarrett Johnson, The Mood Swings, Sideways, Scott Laurent, Marc Perlman, Dan "The Plate" Boen, Tim Oesau, DJ Marc "The Guv'nor" Mueller, with a finale by The Susstones Omniphonic Orchestra.
The Current host Steve Seel will welcome the evening.
