Hello my little block-rockers! Memorial Day weekend is upon us, which means it's a good time to get together with friends and loved ones and think about and celebrate the things that are really important to us. And while you are getting together, The Current can be your soundtrack, as we are putting together yet another Block Rockin' Weekend.
Beginning Friday at 4 p.m. and running through Monday, The Current will be playing blocks of songs by your favorite artists. We'll be asking you to suggest songs to help fill out the sets, so tune in and follow along on Twitter or Facebook to make your requests. Blocks of songs, rockin' all weekend — that's how we do.
Rain Or Shine — It's Festival Weekend
This long weekend also brings with it another slate of great music festivals. The Memory Lanes Block Party, Heliotrope 9 Festival, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes and of course Soundset take place this weekend, running the gamut of musical types for every taste and neighborhood. Check out our Summer Festivals map and info on the Local Current Blog, and plan out your musical marathon.
Brother Ali and Jim James On The Horizon
Rhymesayers Entertainment recording artist and Soundset host Brother Ali will be stopping by The Current's Morning Show at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow to tell you more about the festival, which features Atmosphere, Lupe Fiasco, POS, Ghostface Killah & Raekwon and more.
Another great outdoor music event on the horizon takes place on August 10th when My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses and Trampled By Turtles take over the Somerset Amphitheater. MMJ's Jim James talked with Jill and Steve on The Morning Show today about the show and the band's other projects. Listen here and mark your calendars.
Speaking of lots of great music, we have a LOT of great music for you to check out on our First Listen page. You can stream the new albums by Regina Spektor, Sigur Ros, The Walkmen and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. Yes, the entire albums by all those bands — before they are available for sale. Happy listening!
On June 4th The Current is proud to host an exclusive performance by Metric as they fly in to the Twin Cities just to play a show for us! If you'd like to attend this intimate performance here at The Current HQ, enter to win a pair of tickets here and tune in for your chance to win tickets on the air.
In closing this week, today is Bob Dylan's 71st birthday, so of course we couldn't let the day go by without a little nod to the now recipient of the National Medal of Freedom and one of Minnesota's most noted natives. Happy Birthday Mr. Z, from all your fans, including Cloud Cult, Karen O and Rage Against The Machine.
Have a safe and happy weekend everyone; see you next week.
-Ali
