State of the Arts for January 7, 2004
Large distinctive buildings are cropping up all over the Twin Cities. There's
the new Guthrie Theater complex, the new Central Library and the new Walker Art
Center expansion, just to name a few. How will these monoliths change the look
of the landscape? And what effect does architecture have on culture?
Architecture in Minnesota
There are lots of striking big buildings by well-known architects going up in Minneapolis; the new Guthrie Theater designed by Jean Nouvel, the new Central Library in Minneapolis designed by Cesar Pelli, and the new Walker Art Center expansion designed by the architects Herzog and de Meuron. Taken each individually, these are significant and intriguing new works. But as a whole, how will these buildings change the face of the city? And what are the consequences for the community? We talk with Steve Buetow, architect with SALA Architects, Inc and we take your calls.
Yeh Yeh's House
Evelina Chao is a violist with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. She's also a writer, and she's just published a memoir called "Yeh Yeh's House" about her first trip to China. Marianne Combs talks with Chao about how the trip changed her, her understanding of her heritage, and her relationship with her family. Chao will sign books following SPCO concerts on January 14 and 15 and at Barnes and Noble in Edina on January 18.
