State of the Arts for November 12, 2004
Since his debut on the music scene in the early 1960s Dylan has been analyzed, criticized, idolized and romanticized. But throughout it all he's remained a poetic and musical mystery. Now, at the age of 63, he's published a memoir titled "Chronicles, volume 1." After years of avoiding the media, Dylan provides a fresh, startlingly honest account of his years as a troubadour and unwilling cultural icon.
On this special fundraising edition of State of the Arts, Marianne Combs and Dominic Papatola discuss Bob Dylan's new autobiography with three guests: New Yorker music critic Alex Ross, Dylan fan Paul Strickland and Minneapolis Star Tribune music critic and editor Jon Bream.
Plus, Erin Galbally reports on a new show tracing the evolution of abstract painting at the Rochester Art Center. And Marianne and Dominic take a look at arts events across the state.
Minnesota's abstract art tradition
Say "abstract art" to most people and they think New York, California, or Europe. But Minnesota has a well established if not well known tradition of abstract art running all the way back to the 1930s. Now the first show ever tracing the evolution of abstract painting in Minnesota is opening at the Rochester Art Center.
New MPR Books Forum
The MPR Books Forum is the perfect space for all of us to discuss authors and all types of writing, but it wouldn't be complete without a host. MPR's own Marianne Combs, host of State of the Arts and a passionate reader, will be here to share her own take on books and guide discussions.
