State of the Arts for August 13, 2004
This week on State of the Arts, we'll talk about how to get your kids to be more
creative whatever their skill level. Plus, we follow an avid theater-goer as she
navigates the Minnesota Fringe Festival and hear how contestants are prepping
for the Fargo-Moorhead Battle of the Bands.
Kids and Creativity
The arts are a surefire way to boost a child's creativity and, some say, I.Q. So what's the best way to inspire a child to take interest in the arts? Once they're signed up, how to keep them interested? And if they turn out to be incredibly talented—what to do? Joining us in studio with tips to help us encourage our children to explore their artistic side is Richard Hitchler, Artistic Director of Steppingstone Theatre.
- Your Voice
Tell us your story
Have you had any luck getting your child interested in the arts? And if so, how have you managed to keep them focussed? This could be music lessons, painting, theater or dance, or any other artistic pursuit that comes to mind.

Fringing It
The 10-day Minnesota Fringe Festival is well into its first week. Some people like to immerse themselves in the Fringe, and sample every theatrical flavor it offers. Minnesota Public Radio's Chris Roberts tagged along with one such fringe aficionado and has this report. And we check in with our own critic Dominic Papatola to get his favorite picks from this year's festival.
Battle of the Bands
It's difficult for young musicians to find a place to play their music, no matter where they live. But in rural areas the challenge is particularly difficult. Mainstreet Radio's Bob Reha reports on how one "Battle of the Bands" is helping.
