State of the Arts for April 9, 2004

State of the Arts for April 9, 2004
This week, we find out how museums build and alter their collections. Plus, we talk about the new play "99 Histories," the Midwest premiere of a Mexican composition and what The Minnesota Museum of American Art has in store now that it has reopened its doors.

BohémienneSelling from the Collection
"The Bohémienne" by William Alfonse Bouguereau is heading to Christies in New York City. Protesters have been demanding that Minneapolis Institute of Art keep the piece in Minnesota. Professor Gabriel Weisberg from the University of Minnesota's Art History Department joins us in studio to discuss how museums make the decision to sell a painting and how they add onto their collections.

Guests:
Professor Gabriel Weisberg from the University of Minnesota's Art History Department
Wing Young Huie and Tara Simpson-Huie Minnesota Museum of American Art
The MMAA will host a re-opening party for their new, although temporary, home in the Ramsey County Government Center in downtown St. Paul. The first show will be "9 Months in America: An Ethnocentric Tour" by photographer Wing Young Huie. Marianne Combs tours the exhibit.

Julia Cho
Julia Cho is a rising star in the theatre world. She has developed plays at New York Theatre Workshop, The Sundance Theatre Lab and The Mark Taper Forum. Her latest play 99 Histories is on stage in Minneapolis at Theater Mu. Sarah Lemanczyk introduces us to Cho.

Latin American Fiesta
The Wayzata Community Church hosts the Midwest premiere of an unusual piece of music—an organ concerto by a Mexican composer. We talk to Diana Lee Lucker, the organist who will perform the piece this weekend.

Dominic's Commentary
Kids today are much more talented than when Dominic was in school.
