We believe that everyone who works at the Current (and most people who don't) have in them at least one great idea for a radio show - something they are passionate about - something that hasn't been done, and something that would be interesting to do. The ideas might be a one-offs or ongoing programs, but what if we had a place on the schedule where we could push ourselves to create and air new shows? As an idea lab, as a way to extend what we do at the Current, just because it'd be fun and 'cause we can. 9 p.m. on Sunday nights, The Current Presents.

Beloved local humorist and storyteller Kevin Kling transformed the Fitzgerald Theater's stage the weekend of December 16-18th into a whimsical world of fairies and mischief in his latest MPR commission "Of Mirth and Mischief."
Based on Kling's personal experiences, "Of Mirth and Mischief" follows a young boy's extended stay at the hospital over the Holidays. While moving between wounds and wellness the young boy encounters many enchanting characters that shape his time at Shriners Hospital.
The "Of Mirth and Mischief" soundtrack was curated by Steve Kramer of The Wallets and features Haley Bonar, Aby Wolf, Jennifer Armour, and James Diers of Halloween, Alaska. All the songs from are free and available for download at here.

Can television commercials be an artform? We find the adverts pesky as they break up our favorite programs. However, commercials have recently become cool not for the product they advertise, but the music playing in the background. In this Sunday's episode of Current Presents, we'll delve into how some of the decade's biggest songs were booked for companies like American Express, Volkswagen, Apple, and more, transforming the artist's career and the product simultaneously.

Join Barb Abney on a musical journey through the 90's. We'll play an under-appreciated gem, a few bands that made their debut on college radio and later broke into the mainstream, a set of definitive indie tracks, then pepper in a pair of emo-pop tracks , a couple of one hit wonders (or blunders), a pair of musical departures and a live cover thrown in for good measure.
Who knows, maybe you'll be reminded of Dolly the cloned sheep, or tempted to add Friends to your streaming que. Lace up your Doc Martens, grab your Tamagotchi pet and tune in!

Inside Red Hot Chili Peppers: I'm With You August 28, 2011
June 4, 2010 marked the last of our scheduled Current Road Trips and it was a great way to go out. The day was perfectly sunny and warm for a road trip down to Austin, MN. There was a pit stop at a creepily abandoned road house with a giant sign reading "Fine Foods"; the SPAM museum was bigger, louder and more SPAM-y than we could have ever hoped; and the show at the beautifully restored Paramount Theater was the perfect cap for the evening.
Each show has its own spirit — and this one was no different. 300 people (young and old) filled the auditorium of the theater. A highlight for me was watching the crowd jump to their feet and rush to the foot of the stage and dance for the final Tapes 'n Tapes song. Mary had everyone in the room laughing and on the edge of their seat for the big reveal of the winner for Rock The Garden Tickets (over 150 people entered to win). Our engineers Michael DeMark and Erik Stromstad made the show sound flawless and Nate Ryan did some crazy photo/video camera work that I'm really excited for everyone to see.
Other moments that made the Tapes n' Tapes show for me:
-The squealing/shrieking girls (it was definitely Tapes n' Tapes "Beatles" moment)
-The Cloud Machine (you'll have to ask Mary to describe it for you)
-Mary Lucia dressed up as a Hormel employee
-Babies, grandparents, teenagers and even some relatives of the band all in the audience
Thanks again to Tapes 'n Tapes and everyone who came out to the show in Austin, MN!

Every wonder what kind of tunes some of your favorite writers listen to? I wondered the same thing I knew I couldn't possibly be the only writer who relied on music for inspiration. I hunted down a few of my favorite writers, and their answers surprised me. Some cited music as a huge influence, and some turned to it for reasons outside of their writing. I spoke with Steve Almond, Jennifer Egan, Charles Baxter, Dessa and Joe Pernice.

This week Latino Alternative Vol. 2 returns to The Current Presents with music from all over the world, including interviews with local artist "Maria Isa" as well as with Simon Mejia of the Colombian Band "Bomba Estereo." This time Raúl will be joined in hosting by Pablo Miranda.

When Ryan Schreiber founded a small internet music 'zine in 1995 while living in Minneapolis, he had no idea it would turn into what Pitchfork Media is today.
Pitchfork has grown into a wide-reaching web resource for new music, criticism and review, and they've recently stepped out of the virtual world to put on the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, bringing long-standing musical favorites to the Midwest to play alongside their favorite new acts for a three-day weekend of musical goodness.
2011 marks Pitchfork's sixth festival, to take place at Union Park in Chicago July 15-17. Ryan Schreiber chatted with David Safar about the upcoming festival, the history of Pitchfork and he also took over the airwaves to share some songs from artists he's looking forward to seeing this summer ... as well as favorite acts from past festivals.
Boy from the North Country: Bob Dylan in Minnesota May 22, 2011
It's well known that Bob Dylan was born Robert Zimmerman in Duluth and raised in Hibbing, and that he later lived in Minneapolis while he briefly attended the University of Minnesota—where, of course, he dropped out after one year, eventually moving to New York City to kick off his visionary career. However, those early years remain an underexplored part of Dylan's life story, and this documentary seeks to bring them to light.
Boy from the North Country: Bob Dylan in Minnesota features interviews with many people who knew Dylan during his childhood and during his time in Minneapolis. The documentary will also showcase archival tapes of Dylan performing in Minnesota, as well as a guide to the music he heard while living here and how it influenced him.
This week on the Current Presents, cultures and genres collide in Volume 2 of World of Sound. Tony Lopez is the guest host for this week's episode. Borders between nations may be tightening up but music doesn't follow the rules of geopolitics. In fact, it's quite the opposite. From Tex-Mex to Saharan blues; from Cambodian psychedelia to Brazilian garage rock, music transcends and shatters borders. Join Tony this week as he trots around the globe and makes pit stops in Accra, Mexico City, New York City, and Lisbon. He'll also pay a visit to Tunisia and Syria to hear what revolution sounds like. Chances are you're familiar with pairings. It's the prix fixe menu you might see out to dinner where the restaurant staff pre-selects each course and pairs it with wine or in more recent trends, beer. At The Current our appetite leans more towards music, but we definitely like our beer too. Voilà! This week we explore the pairings of beer and music. More specifically, we take a look at the hoppy India Pale Ale and sit down with some local brewers from Fulton and Flat Earth to discuss what makes this beer so wildly popular and what music motivates them while they brew. Andy Thompson – a respected musician in his own right, also writes a blog for City Pages called What's The Hops? and helps school us in the history of the IPA. Sit back, crack open a cold one and let us take you on a beer and musical journey.

This week on The Current Presents, we get a chance to chat with the man many people still only remember from his band Talking Heads. But in the mid '80s, Time magazine called him a Renaissance Man, and lately he has been living up to it! He's been making buildings into musical instruments, writing books about riding bikes and collaborating with Fatboy Slim on a modern opera for the stage about Imelda Marcos of the Philippines. Tune in to hear the background details and a bunch of tunes from the Fatboy Slim collaboration, Here Lies Love.

On this week's Current Presents, we'll learn about the development of remixes and mash-ups. Both forms of music are crucial to bridging divides between cultures and genres of music. We'll talk to John von Seggern, a producer and remix software engineer, about ethnic singing and funk beats; we'll find out why Gregg Gillis, also known as mash-up master Girl Talk, doesn't think Kelly Clarkson is bad; and finally, we'll interview Lewis Pesacov from Afropop band Fool's Gold about turning indie songs into mainstream hip hop. After all, that's what remixes and mashups are all about: making one thing sound like something completely different, and introducing listeners to new music in the process.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings Live at Rock the Garden 2010 December 19, 2010
Rock the Garden took place at the Walker Art Center on June 19th, 2010. Co-presented by the Walker and The Current, the concert featured the Retribution Gospel Choir, OK Go, MGMT, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. We recorded the entire concert, and aired excerpts the following week, but we are now pleased to bring you the entire smoking set that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings performed that day.
Sharon Jones was born in 1956 in Augusta Georgia, which just so happens to be the hometown of James Brown. Sharon later moved to New York City, where she made a living as a prison guard at the Rikers Island City Jail. Eventually, she hooked up with saxophonist Neil Sugarman and bassist Gabriel Roth, whose stage name is Bosco Mann, and their Brooklyn-based label, Daptone Records. Sharon proved to be the perfect vehicle for what the Dap Kings were trying to do, which is to create original soul music with an old-school feel. Daptone uses all vintage analog equipment to record their music, and tries to really capture Soul the way it was done in Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the Sixties. The music of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings evokes the mood and power of Deep Soul singers like Bobby Blue Bland, James Carr, OV Wright and Percy Sledge, but comes from a distinctly feminine perspective. The Dap Kings impossibly tight stage show, with its stop-on-a-dime changes, is straight out of the James Brown playbook.
Enjoy this set of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, recorded live at Rock the Garden 2010, outside the Sculpture Garden of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
Get ready to sit back, relax and unwind your mind as we dig deep and learn all about acid jazz. We'll be listening to veterans on the scene like Grant Green and Donald Byrd alongside some of it's more recent innovators like Jazzanova, Cinematic Orchestra and Saint Germain. This is not your grandparents big-band and bebop, but a separate genre unto itself that mixes jazz, funk and soul with other sounds like bossa nova, dance music and even hip hop.

The Cinematic Orchestra - Reel Life (Evolution II))
Nicola Conte - Il Cerchio Rosso
Kitty Winter Gypsy Nova - Mato Pato

October 24, 2010 The Trashmen -- Marc Sanchez
Listen
This week on The Current Presents, we're taking a look at the beginnings of the local rock music scene in Minnesota. We're lucky enough to have as our guides: The Trashmen.
Dal Winslow, Bob Andreason, and Bob Reed stopped by the Current studios a few weeks back to reminisce about the scene and walk through the history of their band. Most people know the Trashmen from their hit, "Surfin' Bird," with its driving rhythm and gurgly-voiced singing, "well everybody's heard about the bird... bird, bird, bird... bird is the word." Love it or hate it, the song is a definite earworm.
"Surfin' Bird" made it to #4 on the Billboard charts in December of 1963. The band was invited to play American Bandstand in January of 1964. The show was in the process of moving it's studios from Philadelphia to Los Angeles at the time, and they didn't have the budget to fly the whole band out. So here you get one of the strangest versions of "Surfin' Bird." It's just drummer Steve Wahrer lip syncing and doing the bird dance.
"Surfin' Bird" has been featured in movies and on TV, but this Family Guy episode took it to a whole new level. The entire episode revolves around the song.

Listen
A little over 2 and a half years ago, Jill Riley and Brett Baldwin posted the first episode of a podcast called Facemelter. It was a little experiment for an online-only program that focused on guitarists, gear and amazing solos.
And the crowds went wild. Well, OK, there were no crowds, but a respectable amount of positive feedback rolled in. Poring over the fan mail—and their record collections—Brett and Jill chose some solos and kicked out (the jams on) 12 more episodes.
They had every intention of picking back up where we left off... but things just weren't the same. Our schedules were tough to manage. Jill became a big-time morning show DJ. Brett started listening to jazz and soft-rock... and that's when Facemelter hit rock bottom.
This spring, The Current's Assistant Music Director David Safar proposed these gems be dusted off and played on the radio, and who can argue with logic like that? "The Current Presents" is the perfect venue for it. So this Sunday, August 29th, at 9 p.m., all 13 original episodes will grace the airwaves for the first time. Tune in and feel the burn.

August 8, 2010 That Was the Year in Rock: 1977 -- Program Director Jim McGuinn
Change was in the air. It was the year we met Elvis Costello, and Elvis Presley really did leave the building. It was the first year that no Beatle, Dylan, or Stone had an album on the charts. It was the year punk roared out of England with the Sex Pistols, and saw the debut of artists like Talking Heads, Television, and the Clash. It was the year of Saturday Night Fever and Donna Summer Felt Love. Kiss was the most popular band in America according to a Gallup Poll, but the charts were dominated by the Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, and the biggest selling single of the year belonged to Debbie Boone. A bundle of musical contradictions - and we'll try to sort them out. That Was the Year in Rock: 1977, this week on The Current Presents.
August 1, 2010 Rewind: The History of Dance Music In Detroit - Music Director Melanie Walker
Listen
Tune in with Music Director Melanie Walker for Rewind: The History of Dance Music In Detroit. It's the first in a series of several shows about the birth of electronic music as told through the great cities that claim to have started it.
We'll begin by celebrating the 25th anniversary of the birth of Techno music. After the death of disco the techno wave emerged from it's ashes in the early part of the 80's. Detroit transformed from post industrial to technological and became one of the epicenters of the dance movement.

We'll be listening to the tracks that transformed music as we know it from artists like Innercity, Model 500, Paperclip People, BFC, Suburban Knight, Jeff Mills, Rhythim Is Rhythim, Reese, Cybotron, and Carl Craig along with the music that influenced these ground breaking producers like Kraftwerk, Sly and The Family Stone and Parliment Funkadelic.

He's also written songs for The Time, The Family, Maserati, Sheena Easton, Sheila E. and The Bangles, just to name a few. Artists like Chaka Kahn and Sinead O'Connor have remade his songs and turned them into career changing hit records.
Since his 1978 debut album, "For You", Prince has been making music nonstop and with the recent exclusive release, 20TEN to subscribers of European newspapers last Saturday, he shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Join Tony as he trots around the globe and makes pit stops in Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, Barcelona, and Havana. April 25, 2010 The Hip-Hop Shop: A conversation with Travitron, the Godfather of Minnesota Hip Hop - Host Derrick Stevens Listen
Every music scene has a beginning and every city has a story. MN's Hip-Hop music scene began in 1981 with the chant of these three words: “Yes Yes Y'all”.
I was at a party in a north Mpls community center back in 1981 and when I heard the DJ say "Yes Yes Y'all," I nearly lost my mind. I grew up in Queens, New York City so I've heard those words before, used by street DJs and MCs but I'd been in Minnesota for nearly two years and the closest I'd come to seeing a street DJ or MC since relocating here was listening for periodic rap songs played on that little ten watt radio station in north Minneapolis with bad reception.
After hearing "Yes Yes Y'all" and even getting a chance to say a few rhymes on the mic that night, I thought to myself, maybe Minneapolis isn't that bad after all.
The DJ that said "Yes Yes Y'all" that night, is the man credited with bringing the Hip-Hop culture to the Twin Cities. His name is Travitron and he is known to many as The Godfather of Minnesota Hip-Hop.
Travitron is our special guest on this week's edition of The Current Presents. April 4, 2010 Tour De Scene - Hosts: Jade and Dave Campbell, Co-Producer: Zack Rose Listen
