Conrad has performed scholarly research on the effect music in the operating room has on the work of surgeons.

  Ted Stanley, a philanthropist who donated generously to environmental causes such as the Chesapeake Bay, died of a neurological disease Wednesday at 85. He and his wife, Jennifer, gave millions over the past three decades to organizations including NPR. Robert Siegel remembers his generosity, humility and good nature.

• Yemen Air Strikes Kill Al-Qaida Militants
  Authorities in Yemen say as many as 30 al-Qaida militants were killed in an air strike Thursday in the eastern part of the country. Among those reported killed were two top leaders of al-Qaida in the Arabian peninsula. Unconfirmed reports say another victim was Anwar al-Awlaki, the cleric who had contacts with the alleged Fort Hood shooter.
