Powell was first elected to the House in a 2003 special election, and re-elected in 2004, defeating DFLer Will Morgan by about 400 votes. He is a paramedic for Hennepin County Medical Center. He serves on the Health Policy and Finance Committee, Regulated Industries Committee, and Commerce and Financial Institutions Committee. Powell also serves on a subcommittee on tourism.
