Minnesota - 5th Congressional District (2008) Survey

Do you favor or oppose the education program known as "No Child Left Behind?"

No, policymakers have sought to improve American schools by increasing government control. But decades of increased spending and increased federal control have yielded little improvement in student performance.
I support full funding of the mandates required by the No Child Left Behind Act. I do not believe that we achieve high standard for our schools by threatening our students, teachers, and schools with funding cuts.

Should federal funding be used to expand embryonic stem cell research?

Yes, support legislation to allow federal funding to be used to expand embryonic stem cell research. It is important the United States remain on the cutting edge of medical technology and our scientists are allowed to pursue life saving cures that will help all Americans.
I do not support federal funding for stem cell research.

What is your stance on immigration?

I support comprehensive immigration reform legislation that includes a clear path to citizenship for the people who are already in the U.S. working and paying taxes. I support passage of the DREAM Act, legislation designed to increase access to higher education for the children of foreign-born workers.
We must secure our borders and re-evaluate and revise a rational and fair immigration policy: Fair to those who have played by the rules and fair to the taxpayer.

Do you favor or oppose legalized abortion?

I am a strong advocate for the right of women to make their own reproductive decisions and for ensuring that all women have access to affordable birth control. I believe a woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child or terminate a pregnancy, particularly when her life is in danger or her health is threatened.
As a Patriot I believe that the first right according to the Constitution of the United States is that of LIFE.

Do you favor or oppose a set date (timeline) for the removal of U.S. troops from Iraq?

I strongly favor a set date (timeline) for the removal of the U.S. troops from Iraq. We are now in our sixth year of War in Iraq, I remain convinced that the best Iraq policy for the United States is to bring our troops and end this war.
I support withdrawing troops once Iraq is stable, but not before.

What is your plan for meeting future energy needs?

We need to encourage environmentally responsible exploration of domestic energy supplies; limit red tape on domestic refineries, encourage alternative energy such as nuclear power and natural gas.
I supported a Renewable Electricity Standard, requiring electric utilities to produce at least 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. The same piece of legislation eliminated or reduced $13 billion in giveaways to oil companies and other energy giants. I oppose drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
