Normally, this race gets little attention. Rep. Martin Sabo runs. Rep. Martin Sabo wins easily. But on March 18, 2006, Sabo announced his retirement from Congress; an announcement that took even DFL-insiders by surprise. Minnesota's 5th Congressional District is made up primarily of the city of Minneapolis and a few adjoining suburbs. It includes the affluent neighborhoods around Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet, the University of Minnesota, and the downtown area. However, a large section of the 5th also includes residents with considerably lower incomes.

Minnesota - 5th Congressional District (2006) Survey

What should the U.S. strategy be in Iraq?

We should withdraw immediately
We should stay until the situation is stable, but we should get the help of other nations.
We should begin the withdrawal immediately and maintain an "over the horizon" presence in the region. We should rebuild what we've destroyed, however.

What is your solution for health care in America?

I favor delinking health care from employment and using health-care purchasing pools to keep premiums low.
We should turn HMOs more into a "brokering function" to bring costs down.
Rather than numerous for-profit insurance companies with high administrative costs, a single, non-profit system with equal access for all Americans should be implemented.
I favor a single-payer universal health care program.

What is your view of "immigration reform" in the United States?

NAFTA and CAFTA should be repealed. A pathway for permanent status for undocumented immigrants should be developed along with access to health care and higher education. Enforcement measures should not simply lead to fear and exploitation.
I support the "McCain-Kennedy bill," which provides emphasis on both border security and a guest worker visa program. Building a fence around our country is a "kneejerk" reaction. The U.S. should also crack down on employers who hire people who've entered the country illegally.
We are a sovereign country, we have the right to have sovereign borders. We need to screen people who are here illegally, deport criminals, and get the others on a path to immigration that every other immigrant has had to follow. What immigrants go through now is "degrading."

What do you see as the role of religion in schools and in politics?

I believe in the separation of church and state in public schools. People shouldn't feel they have to have religion interjected in our public schools.
I believe firmly in the separation of church and state. We must promote tolerance of all people and all faiths. This can be promoted in schools and by legislation.
I do not support school vouchers. Schools should be about educating our kids and churches and synogogues should be about faith.
I believe faith should be practiced in homes and in church. I oppose any measure that would stop people from challenging others who introduce religious observance into the public school. I oppose the use of vouchers in schools that are primarily religious.
