SCHIP expansion On October 3, 2007, President Bush vetoed a bill expanding the SCHIP program, to provide health care to 10 million more children. The program is designed to subsidize health coverage for families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance. Do you favor or oppose the proposed expansion? ANSWER OPTION
I am not supporting the proposed expansion of SCHIP, because it fails to put poor kids first and relies on reckless funding schemes. This bill the president vetoed is a huge expansion of a government program extending coverage to illegal immigrants and those already insured.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
I am pleased to continue to support health care coverage for children and the extension of the SCHIP program until we can reach a comprehensive, bipartisan agreement. I am not supporting the proposed expansion of SCHIP, because it fails to put poor kids first and relies on reckless funding schemes. Stem cell research Should federal funding be used to expand embryonic stem cell research? ANSWER OPTION
No, I do not support federal funding for stem cell reserach.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
On October 8, 2006 the Star Tribune reported that Rep. John Kline and fellow republican Michele Bachmann opposed federal funding of research on new stem cell lines. Kline also voted NO on legislation expanding research to more embryonic stem cell lines. (More Info)

I am in favor of privatizing Social Security.

Immigration issues What is your stance on immigration? ANSWER OPTION
I support the security approach; using systematic border surveillance through more effective use of personnel and technology and physical infrastructure enhancements to prevent unlawful border entry.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
Kline voted YES on building a fence along the Mexican border and well as enacts other measures to increase security along U.S. borders. (More Info)

Gas tax increase Would you favor an increase in the federal gasoline tax to pay for road construction projects, such as the rebuilding of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis. ANSWER OPTION
No, by putting a one-year hold on wasteful pork projects while easing Americansa pain at the pumps and addressing improvements to our nation' infrastructure, this legislation simultaneously focuses on important energy, economic and transportation concerns.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
On May 30, 2008, Kline sponsored the Gas Tax Relief and Earmark Moratorium Act. Kline said: "As many Minnesotans begin their summer travel that includes vacations and weekends at the lake, this will offer much-needed relief. By putting a one-year hold on wasteful pork projects while easing Americansa pain at the pumps and addressing improvements to our nation' infrastructure, this legislation simultaneously focuses on important energy, economic and transportation concerns." Same-sex marriage Do you favor or oppose a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman? ANSWER OPTION
I support legislation that defines marriage as one-man-one-woman and also legislation that bans gay marriage.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
Kline voted YES on both, legislation on Constitutionally defining marriage as one-man-one-woman and on YES on a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage. (More Info)

Abortion Do you favor or oppose legalized abortion? ANSWER OPTION
I think abortions should be legal, but restricted.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
Voted YES on restricting interstate transport of minors to get abortions. Voted YES on banning partial-birth abortion except to save mother's life. Kline also accepted an endorsement from the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) and National Right to Life (NRL). (More Info)

Housing crisis What do you think should be done -- if anything -- in the wake of the near collapse of companies specializing in subprime mortgages, and the foreclosures of homes? ANSWER OPTION
We need legislation that would maintain the benefits subprime lending has brought to our working families while protecting against abusive practices which threaten the mortgage market.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
Kline voted YES on legislation regulating the subprime mortgage industry. He said: "With the growing number of foreclosures, we in Congress must strike a delicate balance between responding to the current mortgage crisis while also preserving opportunities for all borrowers. This legislation would maintain the benefits subprime lending has brought to our working families while protecting against abusive practices which threaten the mortgage market." (More Info)

Iraq War Do you favor or oppose a set date (timeline) for the removal of U.S. troops from Iraq? ANSWER OPTION
I do not believe a timetable, or redeployment of troops, is necessary until victory is achieved.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
Kline voted Voted NO on legislation redeploying US troops out of Iraq starting in 90 days (HR 2237). (More Info)

Afghanistan What changes would you propose to the war policy in Afghanistan? ANSWER OPTION
Enhancing the security of Afghanistan also requires an increase in support from our NATO allies.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
In February, 2008, Congressman Kline traveled with a Congressional delegation to Afghanistan where he met with high ranking military officials to discuss progress being made by Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in rebuilding Afghanistan. "To improve the infrastructure and security there, we must empower local government officials and increase civilian participation," Kline said after the trip. "Enhancing the security of Afghanistan also requires an increase in support from our NATO allies." (More Info)
