After the death of a son, he and his wife decided they wanted to leave Chicago. He saw a newpaper article about the mining boom on Minnesota\'s Iron Range, and he thought the description in the article made Eveleth sound like a nice place to live. So he wrote to the postmaster in Eveleth asking if Eveleth had need of an Italian bakery. The postmaster replied, that they already had a Finnish baker and a Slovenian bakery, but that he thought they could probably use an Italian bakery, too, so the uncle and his wife and children moved to Eveleth. Later his wife died, after giving birth to their ninth child, and the uncle needed someone to care for his 8 surviving children while he worked in the bakery. He went through a succession of hired girls, all of whom quit after only a short time. ALthough he was one of the wealthiest men in Eveleth, and paid quite well, no one wanted to work that hard and none could handle caring for 8 lively children. There were women who wanted to marry him, but none wanted so many children. One woman would have married him, but only wanted to keep one of the 8 children, and wanted him to get rid of the other seven. So, he wrote to my grandmother and her sister, who were living on Lussinpiccol, an island in the Adriatic then owned by Italy, which now belongs to Croatia. They were suffering from malnutrition because of the lack of food on the island. (Their parents had lost 5 of their seven children, presumably to malnutrition). So my grandmother and her sister agreed to come to Minnesota to care for the children, who were their cousins. The families remaining back in Minnesota lived in Tivolli Township. There were a number of families of mixed Native linneage who pettioned the US Government under President Ulysses Grant and were given portions of land in Southern Minnesota if they pledged to assimilate into the farming environment. The families were probably more native than European but they made a point to accentuate their European heritage. Many Ho-Chunk people missed their Wisconsin birthplace and many immigrated back to Wisconsin where they are today many Ho-Chunk Missions or parcels of land. Recent anthropological research has found eveidence that the Ho-Chunk people are one of the oldest if not the oldest language groups in North America with ties to the large agarian groups in Illinois.
