Richard John Neuhaus, a Catholic theologian who helped create an influential coalition of conservative Catholics and Protestants, died Jan. 8 at the age of 72.
Neuhaus was the founder of First Things, a monthly ecumenical journal, as well as the author of several books, including As I Lay Dying: Meditations Upon Returning and Catholic Matters: Confusion, Controversy, and the Splendor of Truth.
In his essay "Will All Be Saved?" Neuhaus considered the possibility of universal redemption, concluding, "we do not know; only God knows; but we may hope."
