Hungarian Leader Under Fire for Campaign Lies

by Emily Harris, NPR

In Hungary, a peaceful demonstration against the prime minister turns into a riot outside a central TV station and an attempt to storm it.

As many as 10,000 demonstrators had assembled to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, who was heard in a taped conversation saying that he lied about the national economy during his successful re-election campaign this past spring.

Gyurcsany says he won't step down; some reports suggest he deliberately leaked the conversation to help push through reforms.
