Violence May Aid Hezbollah in Lebanon

Analysts say Israel's attacks over its northern border have an unintended consequence: The Israeli bombardments are rallying former Lebanese critics to Hezbollah's side.

It remains unclear what Hezbollah's leaders were expecting when they launched a cross-border operation last week to capture two Israeli soldiers.

Analysts in Beirut say Hezbollah acted for a number of possible reasons: to help besieged Palestinian militants in Gaza; to send a message to the United States and Israel on behalf of Iran and Syria; and to counter demands from Lebanese rivals that the militia be disarmed.
