Storytelling showcase

Minnesota Public Radio presents Storycraft with Kevin Kling, an evening of master Twin Cities' storytellers bringing innovation to live storytelling and giving new form to a story told. Storycraft is part of Kevin Kling's original works residency with Minnesota Public Radio. Kling has been leading story telling workshops in Duluth and St. Paul with Minnesota's best live storytellers. This showcase is the fruit of months of workshop labor. The best indentified storytellers in the region have gathered for this experiment in defining advances in the craft of storytelling. This specific community has become MPR content contributors with on-air and on-line commentaries and stories featured on All Things Considered.

Wednesday April 25th in the UBS Forum engage with stories, poems, music and films by Joseph Scrimshaw, Loren Niemi, Courtney Maclean, Allegra Lingo, Gary Dop and Barbara Wiener and other members of the Storycraft workshops. Our storytellers will be asking the question "what do we trust", along with original stories performed by Kevin Kling. Tickets for this literary evening will be limited to 130 and will be on sale 4/10 at the MPR Box Office for $15, and discounted to $12 for MPR Members. The Box Office is open Tuesday - Friday 12pm -5pm and tickets may be purchased over the phone 651-290-1200.

The Residency

The Fitzgerald Theater is thrilled to announce a 3-year residency with local famed humorist, author and playwright, Kevin Kling. As part of the residency, Kling will present original works exclusively on the Fitzgerald Theater stage, conduct storytelling workshops and provide commentaries for Minnesota Public Radio. "Kevin has the ability to tell a story like no one else," said Tony Bol, director, performance programs at The Fitzgerald Theater. "Kevin's unique wit and unmatched flair for story-telling is perfectly matched with the Fitzgerald Theater's sing-and-tell-story-stage."

The first original work planned is a one-of-a-kind holiday show for all ages directed by Peter Rothstein titled Of Mirth and Mischief. The show's musical director, Steve Kramer has partnered with Haley Bonar and James Diers of Halloween, Alaska to compose and perform original music for the show.

Of Mirth and Mischief is inspired by the experiences, tragedies and mishaps that have shaped Kling's and Kramer's lives and made them who they are today. The show has a rocker's edge with a distinct sweetness that takes theatergoers down a path of irony through tales of inner-city elves, broken fairies and holiday collisions.

Storytelling workshops will be held in St. Paul and Duluth. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and exchange methods, learn from Kling and each other, and explore the live visceral storytelling experience and the intimacy of radio.

On the air, Kling will deliver exclusive commentaries that feature his personal stories with a timely take on current events. "There is an abundance of world-class musicians, storytellers, writers, artists and performers that call Minnesota home…on purpose," said Kevin Kling. "I am excited to work with some of these amazingly talented people during my residency at the Fitzgerald Theater."
