50 years after vaccine, polio hangs on

Fifty years ago, researchers at the Universities of Michigan and Pittsburgh announced they had created a polio vaccine that was "safe, effective and potent." The Salk vaccine and the oral vaccine that followed eradicated polio in the United States in less than 25 years, but the disease still lingers in places like Nigeria, India and Pakistan.
