Carver County teen crowned Princess Kay of the Milky Way
A 19-year-old from Norwood Young America was crowned the 61st Princess Kay of the Milky Way on Wednesday evening.
Jeni Haler studies animal science and Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Minnesota. She was representing Carver County at the annual dairy princess competition.
To kick off her official duties, Haler will sit in a refrigerated cooler for six hours while a 90-block of butter is sculpted in her likeness. Linda Christensen is the sculptor -- it will be her 43rd year carving the Princess Kay butter sculpture.
The competition, which judges princesses based on their knowledge and enthusiasm of the dairy industry, is sponsored by the Midwest Dairy Association.
Haler will promote the dairy industry and farmers to the public throughout her one-year reign, which will also include advocating for a program that encourages kids to be active and a healthy diet that includes dairy.
