It's a summer weekend in the Twin Cities. Which means: Plenty of things to do, see and experience. But plan accordingly: Forecasts are calling for light showers Saturday and Sunday — and stretches of a few major Twin Cities roads will be closed or reduced to fewer lanes throughout the weekend.

1. Watch a random variety of performance art at Fringe Festival

This festival of performance art selects its lineup by pulling numbered ping pong balls out of a bingo cage. Its philosophy: "We believe everyone has the capability to make great art, and, more importantly, everyone should get their chance to try."

Jeff Larson, Minnesota Fringe Festival executive director, joined The Daily Circuit to talk about what's new this year and how to decide what performances to see. Arts reporter Marianne Combs asked festivalgoers Friday for their opening night reviews. See 10 of them before you head out.

The festival started this Thursday and runs through Aug. 10.

2. Watch great sports movies you've never heard of

For this week's Screen Time, Cube Critic Euan Kerr follows Kerri's interview with David Epstein on his book "The Sports Gene." There have been many movies made about sports: some great, but the majority even more formulaic than a romantic comedy.

We list 9 of the greats you (maybe) haven't heard of.

3. Delve into self-portraits in the age of selfies

"Self & Others" displays the work of artists Nancy Robinson, Frank Gaard, Pamela Gaard, and Stuart Mead.

The show captures how the artists see others, and in a way, how they see themselves.

The show runs through Sept. 6.

4. See 'Neverland' performed by a performing arts circus

Circus Juventas is the largest youth performing arts circus in the country. This weekend, it starts performances of "Neverland," its 20th anniversary production.

This week, MPR News arts writer Marianne Combs interviewed Circus Juventas Founder and Executive Director Dan Butler about the youth circus school's relationship with St. Paul.

5. Celebrate recovery at Hazelfest

This outdoor community festival sponsored by The Current celebrates the hope of recovery. It will feature recovery speakers, music, 12 step meetings, family activities, food trucks and fun.

The music line up includes The Jayhawks and Trapper Schoepp and the Shades.
